Optimizing your content for SEO is a never-ending process. There’s always more you can learn and a thousand techniques you can apply to improve your rankings; however, that can be daunting to lots of content creators. That’s why we recommend going for simple to implement techniques that will improve rankings and drive more traffic.
In this article, we’ll share with you a simple yet effective SEO technique that lots of publishers overlook. It will allow you to increase the number of related keywords your content is ranking for, increasing organic visibility and thusly driving more website traffic.
It’s using LSI keywords.
What are LSI Keywords?
LSI (latent semantic indexing) keywords are words thematically related to your primary keyword. They help search engines understand what different webpages are about by providing additional contextual information.
For example, if you search for “social media” on Google, you’ll see a list of suggestions for relevant searches.
These items highlighted in red below are what Google considered to be related or LSI keywords to the topic of social media because they are often searched for in relation to that topic.
Because these terms such as “influencer” or “marketing” are so closely correlated in Google’s algorithm you want to make sure you include these in the section headers and body copy of the content piece on social media.
But now you might be wondering — what makes LSI keywords so important to SEO?
Why LSI Keywords are Important to SEO
There used to be a time where keyword stuffing worked for content publishers. Ranking for a keyword was highly dependent on how often it appeared on a webpage because that was the only way Google could determine what the topic of the page really was. As Google got smarter, it introduced latent semantic indexing to its system, and it has since successfully ended keyword stuffing and low-quality content.
Also, Google is always trying to serve the best user search experience, but to do that it has to understand both website content and user search intent. User search intent, however, is tricky, epecially with online users becoming too lazy to type long understandable search queries. Thankfully, with latent semantic indexing, Google can quickly discern a page’s overall content topic not just based on a focus keyword but the LSI keywords on the page. That means two things:
- More relevant and helpful content is shown to users every day — which helps them find efficient solutions to their problems.
- Publishers are more encouraged to create in-depth, killer content that addresses a topic or point in its entirety.
How to Leverage LSI Keywords for SEO
You can use latent semantic indexing keywords anywhere in your content. It’s all about the flow and how natural your words sound.
With that being said, SEO experts often recommend that you use them in:
- Heading tags (<h1>, <h2>, <h3>, etc)
- Alt-text and file names
- Link anchor texts
- In the body content
