Background on Linking Out
Building links to your content from other websites have been a source of controversy for some time. While they can often times deliver quick traffic, webmasters occasionally link out to content just for the extra traffic. Google is well aware of the popularity of this practice and has seen been cracking down on webmasters who gather links in this manner. However, done right, linking is a smart way to promote other authorities in your niche. Not only do they provide useful information to the people reading your blog, but links also allow webmasters to build relationships with other site owners.
Acknowledging other authors/blogs by linking out to their content is an important part of blogging etiquette as well as an inbound marketing tactic. Acknowledging you like their content via a ‘Blogroll’ on your site tells you visitors and them you are following. The more you engage with other bloggers, the more likely they are to engage and link to you. Inbound links continually increases exposure and authority to search engines.
In this tutorial, we’ll be using WordPress to demonstrate how to link out on a blogroll, as well as linking out through your content.
How to Add Create and Add Links to a Blogroll
Step 1. Start by logging in to your WordPress Administration section.
Step 2. If your site uses a blogroll navigate to “Links.”
Step 3. Then, click “Add New.” Simply add the blog name and URL, and then click “Add Link.”
Step 4. If your theme doesn’t currently display a blogroll, you should be able to add it by navigating to “Appearance,” then clicking “Widgets,” and then dragging “Text” into an active sidebar block.
Step 5. Next, open up the “Text” module and insert HTML-formatted links into the paragraph box.
The links should be in the proper HTML format:
<li><a href=”Website address”>Name of Website</a></li>
(Add more here if you like!)
Once complete, click “Save” to finish the process.
You can also link out to other bloggers through your own content. This is one of the best ways to connect because not only are you promoting someone else, you’re giving the source more credibility in the search engines.
Step 1. Highlight the text you want to link out from and click the “Link” icon in WordPress.
Step 2. You’ll see a window open up giving you the option to link to new content or your own existing content. Put your link of choice in the URL field and hit “Add Link.”
Step 3. Congrats on linking out! You can always add more links to other parts of your content.
