Question 1: What advice can you give when it comes to my website going down for a week while we make some much needed improvements to the content. Will this largely affect my keyword rankings?

Our Response: We recommend that you display a “site under construction” page to retain site visitors, keep them up-to-date, and protect your traffic if you are worried.

To make it clear: the website will likely still see a drop in visitors causing lowered rankings during this downtime and several weeks afterward. However, the “site under construction” notification helps, and constant inbound marketing efforts increase the speed of your traffic progress. It sounds like the newly improved and updated page will bring in more traffic, so the website going down will be worth your while!

Question 2: What are some EASY ways to increase my page load speed?

Our Response: We’d like to suggest a couple quick methods to look into here. First, check on your image sizes and reduce them when possible. In addition, check the file type for your images. The jpg format usually take up the most space.

Next, look into optimizing your plugins. If you are not using a specific plugin or two, it’s okay to deactivate them. It’s also important to make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of your CMS. After implementing some of these strategies, check your current score by running a Pingdom Website Speed Test. Learn how here.

Question 3:  Can I include a dash in my primary keyword phrase? Does this help or decrease my rankings at all? Example: “Nebraska Coffee Shop – Tea Specialty” or “Cakes_Teas Nebraska Coffee Shop.”
