Background on Google Maps
Google Maps has quickly become one of the most widely used map applications on the web. Businesses can create listings to attract potential customers and increase their search rankings, and map users can quickly find places of interest.
With its fast response times, interactive maps, and worldwide coverage, Google Maps is the most important and go-to application for both customers and local small businesses. However, these massive benefits for the end user bring along some difficult situations for business owners.
Google’s Perspective on Duplicate Listings
Duplicate business listings are common occurrences for local small businesses. Oftentimes a company changes locations and inputs this address data incorrectly. Other times, Google or local data aggregators create additional listings for the same company. In these situations, Google receives business information from multiple sources, and duplicate listings occur in the process of syncing them together.
While these placements are frequent mistakes, Google will penalize websites that violate its strict rules on duplicate listings. Google will grant lower search rankings and give decreased online visibility to these businesses.
Thankfully, Google allows you the opportunity to find your duplicate listings and erase them to maintain your rankings. It is important for your business to recognize when it has multiple map locations. The process can be confusing but we want to help!
In this important guide, we will show you how to find and remove duplicate listings from Google Maps.
Part I: How to Check for Duplicate Listings
Step 1. Start at Google Maps.
Step 2. Enter your Phone Number in Google Maps to spot any duplicates. Then, enter your Business Name and City of Address.
Step 3. If you do not find listings other than the one you created and the listing is owner-verified, this means you do not have any duplicate listings. Congratulations!
Part II: How to Remove Your Duplicate Listings
Step 1. You will need to get rid of any duplicate listings if they are found. Starting from step two above, click on your duplicate listing and hit “Suggest an edit.”
Step 2. You will now be at the “Report a Problem” window. At this juncture, you can either click on the incorrect information displayed in the listing, leave a note to be addressed, or report something else and send general feedback.
Hitting the “Report something else” link adds another extra step. You can highlight where on the map you see an issue, whereas adding a note about your duplicate listing sends your feedback right away. Add your note on this step, then click “Submit” to continue.
Alternatively when clicking the “Report something else” link, type in your feedback and hit “Send” to continue.
Step 3. You have just sent in your request to Google Maps to make changes. You will now receive email updates to keep tabs on the issue.
Step 4. Next, you will receive a confirmation email from the Google Places Team on your request. The support team should get back to you within 48 hours.
Please note that the update you submit will not go into effect right away. If your request is not resolved within several weeks, talk to a specialist about having your duplicate listing removed. All you have to do is submit your Name, Email, and Phone Number, and a representative should get back to you shortly.
We’d also like to remind you to always be careful when creating any local listings, which will help avoid duplication issues. Make sure that your address information is correctly written (business name, address, city, phone, etc.), and identically listed across every local directory that you decide to add it.
