Question 1: When setting up your company’s citations in local directories like Manta and Yelp, how different do the company description need to be? What guidelines can you offer? Thank you!

Our Response: Business descriptions are an important component of completing a local profile and getting your site optimized for local search results. We’d recommend using the same, constant business description for all your local listings. However, business descriptions can vary when it comes to the  length allowed by the specific directory. To explain, some directories or platforms allow a certain number of characters for the business description field. We usually recommend clients spend some time compiling a few quality descriptions of various character lengths. With this effective strategy, you are prepared ahead of time and don’t have to create new content on the spot when a restriction is discovered. Compiling three descriptions that are short, medium and long in length should work well.

After you carefully write and edit your descriptions, we’d recommend utilizing the same content throughout a majority of your local citations and keeping the descriptions consistent as much as possible. In addition, these descriptions should accurately describe and promote your business/service and include some of your top keywords, but be careful that you’re not overstuffing with keywords. Question 2: How can I change my business name that is listed in Brownbook.net?

Our Response: The team has been working on this issue for a while now, but unfortunately we’ve not yet found a clear-cut pathway. We’re not sure why Brownbook  doesn’t allow businesses to change their business name easily. We’d suggest contacting Brownbook by using their contact form and requesting the change. If you’ve attempted to contact Brownbook but haven’t heard from them, you might need to create another listing.
