With Google’s recent crackdown on SEO practices being leveraged by large companies using “blackhat SEO”, it’s become apparent that SEO represents a tremendous opportunity for many retailers looking to get the most out of their e-commerce SEO efforts. The main takeaway for your small business is that SEO is a major component of some of the most successful e-commerce sites on the Web. While this means that there is a lot of opportunity and that the extensive efforts to build links and drive traffic exerted by the companies below is certainly justifiable, JC Penney and Overstock.com should serve as cautionary tales: invest in SEO, but understand the risks involved with tactics such as paid links.
