INFOGRAPHIC: Choosing the Best Keywords for SEO

Ask anyone in the SEO industry how important keywords are, and you’ll get the same answer from everyone. Choosing the best keywords for your website is crucial in search engine optimization.

Keyword targeting is essential because SEO efforts can take time and energy, and you want to be sure that you’re rewarded with great search engine traffic. Therefore, it is important to find words that aren’t too competitive but provide good search traffic. The below infographic illustrates UpCity’s key tactics for keyword selection. The infographic displays the keyword selection process and uses the example of a New Orleans lawyer.     I have the same basic premise that I go by, and it works for sure! When you get just the right combination of factors going for you the skies the limit.

    I’m getting between 1500 to 2000 pageviews daily at one of my EMD’s. The site has been live since June 13th. 2012 and I have a grand total of 63 backlinks.

    I only built 20 of them so the rest are occurring naturally. Point being, when your keyword research has been done correctly the search engines work for you!

    Good post. Relative to local search engine optimization (adding the city as a modifier), the only thing I would challenge is the amount of time to produce good results. If your website is active and updated, optimized pages can earn page 1 positions in a matter of a few days to a few weeks. The dirty little secret is that few businesses are intentionally optimizing their sites. Of course key word competition will present an obstacle but I’ve have seen business blog pages show up in search results (1st page) in MINUTES! Do it right and you will be rewarded.

    This is the first time I’ve seen the balance between high/low competition and high/low volume explained, thank you! The keyword modifiers, and your puzzle graphic, really demonstrate the idea of niche marketing for me. With a more specific niche, I can make more headway. And I almost never accurately identify my keywords the first time around. This graphic really helps.

    As to @Dan’s question about keywords, the answer to that is yes and no. Google (and other search engines) ignore the list of keywords in the meta data in the head section of the HTML- in other words, you don’t get to tell the search engines what your keywords should be. Instead, the keywords are determined by the search engines (and the searchers.) So keywords are still a thing, but not an explicit thing.

    In Step 3 of the graphic, I think the sweet spot is placed badly- I want high volume & low competition (as the text alongside mentions) but the “sweet spot” is mostly in the low volume & low competition quadrant.

      It’s ultimately up to the business which route to go with. It’s much harder to find keywords with high volume and low competition but if you find some, that’s the way to go!

      I saw a couple queries around Dan’s post and wanted to answer. I’m part of the keyword selection team at DIYSEO.

      Keywords are critical for Googles search algorithm. Think how you search online…you type in words (queries) on information you want to access such “best keyword selection”. Google robots read the words all of the pages they have indexed and if they are relevant to the search query, they post you in search results. That’s oversimplified and there are many other factors in Google’s algo (even a team of LIVE people that review results), but keywords are the place to start.

      Getting the best keywords, relevant to your business, is critical. Next step, place them in your site where the search engines look for information about your products or service. Title tags, meta description, body copy, etc. The DIYSEO platform tells you how. Search engines do NOT index keywords in ‘meta data’ but some old directories still pull that info so it doesn’t hurt to include them if you can.

    I believe the best way to really find out which keywords will work best for your business, is to start your marketing plan with a robust PPC campaign.
    Use tracking phone numbers, record all calls, and use proxy servers for the ability to use different phone numbers in different ad groups.

    That will give you a lot of data fast.
